“Elio de Angelis «Taking Responsibility»” — Grand Prix International n. 23/1980

L’articolo, del quale è offerta sotto anche una traduzione in lingua italiana a cura del presente sito, si riferisce al Gran premio d’Austria del 1980. Dopo un lungo digiuno, Elio de Angelis, alla sua prima stagione in Lotus, torna a marcare punti validi per il campionato conduttori. Quelli conquistati in Spagna, a Jarama, all’epoca delle corse disputate durante la stagione estiva, erano già stati invalidati, a seguito della diatriba coinvolgente la FISA e la FOCA. L’italiano otterrà altri piazzamenti ragguardevoli nelle restanti gare della stagione. In relazione alle modifiche sulla vettura cui si accenna, è da ricordare che la Lotus 81 sia stata interessata da migliorie continue, nel tentativo di rincorrere una competitività andata perduta dalla scuderia di Hethel. Proprio in Germania e in Austria, tra l’altro, fece la sua comparsa la Lotus 81B, considerata, all’epoca, un buon compromesso, sulla carta, per recuperare terreno rispetto agli avversari. Elio de Angelis hadn’t really featured much since he took second place in the Brazilian Grand Prix, a second place which might so easily have been a win, for Arnoux ran out of petrol on the slowing down lap. However, the German and Austrian Grands Prix saw the Italian re-emerge, if not as winner, but as a top six runner. Only he and Giacomelli were able to do anything about the big four: Williams, Renault, Ligier and Brabham.

Lotus have begun to take steps to put things right. Chapman’s men are in the throes of a research programme, modifying the Lotus 81 in various ways [omissis].

These technical measures have already begun to bear fruit. «All the same, Lotus have to get back on top one day,» says Elio «maybe now we’re on the way. We’re on the right track».

This year has been difficult and frustrating for Elio, as it has for Mario Andretti who hasn’t yet scored a point in the championship. «Everyone has their own theories about the problems,» says Elio «it’s hard to get things done under those circumstances. But in fact, everyone is right at some time or another, because we have so many different problems».

De Angelis was fifth at Hockenheim when he was forced to retire three laps from the end. A week later, he drove another good race which this time was rewarded by sixth place and a point in the World Championship. «It’s a step forward,» he reckons «but even before these two races, I was confident. Colin Chapman is a genius, so is Peter Wright. They know that they’ll get it right».
