The sad news received too late for inclusion in our last issue was that Elio had decided to leave us at the end of the season. Long-lasting contracts between race drivers and teams have always been rare within the sport and Elio completed his sixth season with Team Lotus this year. Undoubtedly a very gifted person in a number of ways (his performances on water skis, the football field, the tennis courts and the piano have already been well documented) he has seen a great number of major changes with the Team during his spell with us. When he first joined us in 1980 it was at the invitation of Colin Chapman in the role of number two driver to our World Campion Mario Andretti. In only his second Grand Prix with us he produced a highly impressive drive finishing second in the Brazilian Grand Prix. He continued to shine throughout that season gaining fourth place in Italy and the US Grand Prix East and a sixth in Austria. It is as well to remember he was only 22 when he joined but he had already been marked down as a highly skilled driver due to his 1979 season of drives with the Shadow Team. His first season with us was under the Essex banner but John Player were to return the following season and from then on Elio was to be a familiar figure in his black and gold overalls. His first Grand Prix win came in 1982 (that classic finish in Austria is still a fond memory of the Team’s) and he has long been known for his very fast and consistent drives into the points so valuable to any Team.
He has served the Team extremely well through the years and both he and his lovely girlfriend, Ute, will be sorely missed.

La triste notizia ci è giunta troppo tardi per poterla includere nel nostro previo numero. Elio ha deciso di lasciarci alla fine della presente stagione. I contratti di lunga durata fra i corridori e le squadre sono sempre una rarità in ambito sportivo ed Elio ha completato con noi la sua sesta stagione quest’anno. Persona indubbiamente versatile sotto diversi aspetti (menzioniamo le sue gesta nautiche, quelle sui campi di calcio o di tennis, o davanti al pianoforte, tutte ben documentate), ha assistito a numerosi grandi cambiamenti in seno al Team Lotus, durante la sua permanenza qui assieme a noi. All’epoca del suo primo impiego in squadra, nel 1980, sotto invito di Colin Chapman si è messo a disposizione come “numero due”, dietro al nostro campione del mondo Mario Andretti. In soli due gran premi ha fatto breccia con una prova impressionante che gli è valso un secondo posto nell’appuntamento iridato brasiliano. Ha continuato a brillare per tutto il corso della stagione fino a raggiungere un quarto posto in Italia e nel Gran premio degli Stati Uniti Est, senza dimenticare anche un piazzamento in sesta posizione in Austria. Giova ricordare pure che all’epoca aveva soltanto ventidue anni, e che è stato considerato un pilota con le stimmate del campione grazie ai meriti raccolti sul campo nel 1979 con la Shadow. Ai tempi del primo anno con noi, eravamo sponsorizzati dalla Essex e la John Player tornò ad assisterci a partire dall’anno successivo, e da quel momento in poi è divenuto consueto associare Elio a una tuta giallonera. Il suo primo trionfo in un gran premio avvenne nel 1982 (quel finale, ormai divenuto un classico, in Austria è un ricordo a cui la nostra scuderia è affezionata) ed Elio è stato ricordato a lungo per il suo rendimento in gara veloce e consistente, che ci ha permesso di giungere varie volte a punti, una fortuna per qualsiasi squadra.
Ha servito la nostra Scuderia egregiamente attraverso tutti questi anni e tanto lui che la sua adorabile fidanzata, Ute, ci mancheranno con enorme dispiacere.
I nostri più accorati e sinceri ringraziamenti a Elio per le sue splendide prestazioni a nome di tutti noi, sperando che possa raccogliere qualsivoglia soddisfazione altrove in futuro.
